Pentax 17

About a year ago, I read that Pentax had plans to develop a new 35mm film camera. At that moment, I thought, “Wow, that would be fantastic,” as it meant film photography enthusiasts wouldn’t have to rely on second-hand cameras from the ’70s and ’80s or older.

Naturally, I envisioned a new Pentax SLR, as that seemed like a logical choice.

A few days ago, I finally saw the new Pentax 17 camera up close. My first thought was, “What a beautiful camera!” But immediately after, I wondered, “Why is the viewfinder in the middle?”

It turns out Pentax developed a compact camera with a centrally placed viewfinder for composition or framing. It doesn’t have a rangefinder but focuses using a “zone-focus” system. The camera features a fixed 25mm f3.5 lens, an ISO dial, a limited PASM (without A,S and M) dial, and an exposure compensation dial. And that’s about it. Oh, and I almost forgot: it’s a Half Frame camera, so a roll of 35 exposures becomes 70. This also means the default shooting mode is portrait. For landscape shots, you’ll need to hold the camera vertically.

The camera looks quite elegant, but I found its photographic capabilities disappointing. And then there’s the price: around €549. I’m unsure how many of my readers still shoot film occasionally and how many would be willing to pay that amount for a camera with minimal manual settings. Personally, I think Pentax missed an opportunity. But maybe you think differently.

      Marc.
