For my new project—creating short videos while on the way to or during photography—I needed a compact camera capable of shooting in 4K. While testing the Zhiyun gimbal and finding it lacking, I realized even my Olympus E-M10 Mark III could produce decent video with a simple cage, thanks to its excellent stabilization. Not flawless, but good enough for quick clips while biking or exploring.
So why get a new camera? My E-M10 Mark III will soon go to my grandchild, and I needed a tougher, weather-sealed camera with solid 4K video. My E-M1X is too large for the job, and the Olympus E-M5 series didn’t quite fit my needs. That’s when I turned to Panasonic.
ChatGPT helped compile a list of Panasonic models that met my criteria, sorted by price. After checking second-hand markets, I found a barely-used Panasonic Lumix DMC-G81 with only 1,000 shutter clicks for just over €200—complete with two batteries and a 32GB SD card. An incredible deal!
Below is the table I used, which might help anyone looking for an affordable second camera or budget video setup.
Modelname (EU / US) | Average Price New (€) | Average Second-hand Price |
---|---|---|
Panasonic Lumix GX80 / GX85 | €699 | €250-400 |
Panasonic Lumix G80/G81 / G85 | €899* (now still @ €499) | €300-450 |
Panasonic Lumix G90 / G95 | €1.199 | €500-700 |
Panasonic Lumix G9 | €1.699 | €500-750 |
Panasonic Lumix GH5 | €1.999 | €550-750 |
Panasonic Lumix GH6 | €2.199 | €900-1200 |
* Yes, this 9-year-old camera is still being sold as brand new in some stores—if that doesn’t tell you something, I don’t know what will!
A Budget Powerhouse: The Panasonic Lumix G81
A Versatile “Action” Camera
My plan for the G81 is to use it as a kind of larger action camera. Given its rugged build and solid image stabilization, it should perform well in various outdoor conditions. I might even mount it in a cage setup, like the Neewer CA016T for added stability and versatility.
Enhanced Audio Setup
Good video quality deserves good audio, and luckily, I already have some gear to complement this camera. I have a Boya shotgun microphone and a compact Tascam audio recorder, which will allow me to capture much better sound than the built-in microphone if needed.
Final Thoughts
For just over €200, the Lumix G81 is shaping up to be a fantastic investment. With its durable body, improved video capabilities, and compatibility with my existing accessories, it should serve me well in various shooting scenarios. I’m looking forward to it being delivered, unboxing it, and putting it to the test in a full review—stay tuned!

The Ever-Changing Camera Collection: A Passion for Photography
For those who follow my reviews and camera purchases, it may seem like I’m constantly adding new gear to my collection. However, what often goes unseen is that many cameras also leave in the process. Recently, I parted ways with two Olympus Tough cameras (TG-3 and TG-4), as well as an original Olympus E-M10. Soon, the E-M10 Mark III will follow, and the E-M10 Mark II already has a new home within the family.
A significant reason behind these purchases is not just my own passion for photography but also my desire to ignite that same enthusiasm in my grandchildren. Many of these cameras serve as stepping stones, helping them discover the joy of capturing the world around them. Investing in their creativity is something I truly enjoy, and it’s rewarding to see their interest grow.
Of course, with so many cameras leaving, I do have to replenish my own gear now and then. After all, it would be unthinkable for me to be left without a camera—now that would be unheard of ! 🙂 Photography is not just a hobby for me; it’s a way of seeing and experiencing the world, and I intend to keep that passion alive for both myself and the next generation.
