Ulanzi M Rig a light cage for multi use

2 minutes read time

Sometimes, you buy accessories for your camera, phone, or other gear, only to leave them unused. Then, much later, you suddenly find a new purpose for them, or they fit perfectly into a new project. The Ulanzi M Rig is one such accessory for me.

Maybe you have something similar lying around—something you’ve completely forgotten about. Perhaps reading this article will spark a great idea, or maybe you didn’t even know this kind of tool existed for smartphones, and now you realize you could actually use it.

Whatever the case, I hope this helps someone or inspires new ideas!

Well, I’ve had this one for a few years now—it had been sitting around unused, but I’ve recently started using it again. It’s a very lightweight and simple cage, yet it offers plenty of mounting options. Originally designed for smartphones and GoPro-style cameras, it turns out to be surprisingly well-suited for smaller DSLRs or mirrorless cameras. The biggest advantage? It’s compact, lightweight, and highly expandable—essentially a backpack-friendly rig/cage.

Initially, my plan was to use it with the E-M10 Mark III for video work. However, that plan has since changed, as the camera will soon be passed on to one of my grandkids as an upgrade from the original E-M10.

That said, I still see a use for this cage—perhaps with the E-PL9, which only has three-axis stabilization. A cage could help improve stability in that case. I also have a heavier rig/cage, which I’ve mentioned in a previous article—the Neewer CA016T. It’s significantly larger, sturdier, and comes with solid handles, making it ideal for my heavier and bulkier cameras, like the E-M1X.

Ulanzi M Rig – Compact & Versatile Camera Rig

Durable & Portable
A solid metal, U-shaped rig designed for smartphones, action cameras, and small cameras like the Olympus E-M10/E-PL9. Compact and easy to carry in a bag or backpack.

Mounting & Customization
Features multiple 1/4″ and 3/8″ threads, cold shoe mounts, and supports add-ons like microphones, lights, and sound recorders. A separate metal/wood handle (€17 on AliExpress) enhances grip.

DIY & Upgrades
Pipe insulation can serve as budget-friendly side handles (blocks side mounts). A top handle is a useful upgrade for better control and portability.

Pricing
Costs between €25–€50, with fluctuating prices on AliExpress, Amazon, and eBay. Eastern European sellers may charge more—shop around for the best deal!

As I mentioned earlier, the E-M10 Mark III is on its way out. In its place, I tested the Olympus E-PL9, a camera with 3-axis stabilization. I took some photos and recorded a short video, which I’ve included in an article about the Ulanzi M Rig on La Gallerie. You can find the link below:
