Ricoh GR IV with Flip Screen and Flash or Solar Panels on your House – The Price of Always Wanting More

My days shooting with Fujifilm gear are long behind me, but one of my all-time favourite YouTube channels back then was Omar Gonzalez Photography. Omar’s a pro out of New Jersey who cut his teeth on Fujifilm bodies – and nowadays he’s more of a Nikon Z evangelist. I get it: sometimes you outgrow one system and fall for another, I feel a Deja vu comming 🙂 . Regardless, I still tune into Omar’s videos because he’s genuinely funny and, more importantly, his takes actually make sense, most of the time – none of that over-the-top “influencer” fluff.

Recently I watched him take on complaining YouTube visitors on another reviewer’s channel about the Ricoh GR IV – and it was hilarious. Yet Omar nailed the real point: the loudest complainers rarely end up buying the camera anyway. Sure, some criticisms are understandable, but Ricoh designed the GR IV with a very specific philosophy in mind: compactness and simplicity. No weather sealing, no built-in flash, no flip-out screen, … and that’s exactly the point. Adding any of those features would balloon its size and price. But let’s be honest, there’s always someone who assumes “upgrade” means “more of everything,” and influencers or sales reps will happily bash a model’s shortcomings to push you toward something pricier.

This isn’t unique to Ricoh. Remember the Olympus E-PL series? An EVF would’ve been nice everyone said, shure, but it would’ve changed the whole concept – and probably the cost – of those little PENs. Slap on every “must-have” feature and you end up with a completely different camera.

Believe it or not, the same principle applies beyond photography. Take Belgian pensions as an example: endless grumbling about cuts, as if the system magically refills itself. But where were all those complainers when politicians and unions showered subsidies on electric cars, solar panels, and home renovations? Someone had to foot the bill. When no one tracks the numbers and every interest group demands its pound of flesh, sooner or later the tab comes due – usually falling on the very citizens who thought they were getting something for nothing.

Fewer complaints. Less ego. Wanting less. The recipe for a happier life – and, by the way, a clearer take on which camera you really need.
