I want to start this article by making clear that I never actually recommend anything that I haven’t purchased and tried myself. As for “film simulations”, well, I have my own developments known as PictureFX, and they are free for everyone. On FreshLuts you will find even more film simulations that are free. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t come across a simulation that makes me think – well, now I’m willing to pay money for that.
The “Everything” Lut was such a film simulation.
Yeah, it’s a bit of a weird name for a Lut,
but, on the other hand, it does make sense,
as you can use the Lut for almost Everything.
If I were still in the analogue era and would love to use, and love a certain film emulsion, I would probably buy it over and over again, so why not buy this “film” once and be able to use it forever !
The download includes two presets for Lightroom, the .cube Lut, and a .vlt Lut, price : £9.99 – less than the price of a “real” roll of film !
Developed by Emily Lowrey of Micro Four Nerds, it is a very thoughtful film simulation, based on the popular “orange and teal” but still very different. I especially love it for street and architecture, but also people and therefore skin tones look great with this Lut. In fact, she uses it professionally for shooting weddings, so it must be good. I rarely photograph people myself, so I can’t give many examples, but visit her site here and decide for yourself what you think of it.
If you have also decided to buy the Everything Lut, then follow this link here.
And then there’s this : through the link below, you’ll find a YouTube video about how the LUT was created and many examples. She doesn’t even mind if you can see the settings in Photoshop, and even suggests you could give it a try yourself. Personally, I don’t bother, and why should I ? Emily has developed this LUT very well, and for me, nothing needs to be changed. Besides, for £9.99 and the effort she’s put into it, I think the LUT is totally worth it.
Own examples :
Note
1) Obviously the Lut is not usable out of the box in RawTherapee because of the .cube format, however, via a converter I was able to convert it to a PNG Hald Clut.
If you are a Darktable user, or use another paid development program, then there is no problem of course.
2) The out-camera jpg’s below are lens corrected, unfortunately I forgot to do that with the RawTherapee developed ones, hence the “perspective blob” when you switch in the gallery 🙂
3) Don’t forget that a Lut is rarely just applied “as is”, usually small corrections in exposure and/or white balance, and even strength are needed to get the best result
These developments below are just examples, based on my own taste, so it is quite possible that you would develop these photos differently – it’s just to give you an idea, keep that in mind when assessing these samples :
Left, originals – Right, Everything Lut

The country house, due to the harsh sun, the original is dark and bright in color, after the Lut, much lighter, light ocher in color, a very Tuscan look.

The steel bridge, photographed in hard light, and due to the foliage and shadows, the bridge itself is almost unnoticeable in the original, the softening of the green and the lighting of the shadows makes the bridge stand out more, and there is again that Tuscan vibe .

From the wedding pictures, I know the Lut is great for capturing people, but where the Lut performs best for me is in the City. It’s that orange and teal and a little bit of magic !

Hello Bernhard,
No problem, the PictureFX Luts can be downloaded here : /2024/01/26/picturefx-pro-2024/
and also on FreshLuts.com here : https://freshluts.com/searches/805556
They can be used in most image editing software such as Photoshop Lightroom, Luminar, Rawtherapee, Darktable and many others.
Choose a particular Lut to color grade your photos, download, load it into your software, open a photo and apply.
Regards, Marc.
