I’ve been searching for a camera that I could always have with me in any situation, one that’s as small as possible, durable, with zoom capabilities, and the best possible image quality. I’ve had many, like the Samsung WB and Panasonic DMC-TZ series, but most of them broke because they were too fragile. Then I bought a Fuji X100, but it wasn’t really small and compact. So, I continued searching for the perfect Everyday camera.
I got my first Olympus TG camera in the summer of 2021, it was the Olympus TG-6. A year later, I wrote the article “Downgrade your Camera Gear” when I traded my TG-6 for a TG-3. The main reason was that I wasn’t using most of the extra features that the TG-6 had, and at that time, I could buy a TG-3 for a bargain.

But recently, I had a chance on eBay to purchase a TG-4 in excellent condition at a reasonable price, so I decided to go for it.

The TG-4 actually has very similar features to the TG-3, but it has some features that I missed in the TG-3, under which the ability to shoot in Raw. The TG-4 was actually the camera I wanted, but it wasn’t available anywhere back then.

Here are the advantages of the Olympus TG-4 over the TG-3 :
- Improved sensor and processor: The TG-4 has an upgraded sensor and image processor, which can result in better image quality and low-light performance compared to the TG-3.
- Focus stacking capability: A unique feature of the TG-4 is the ability to perform focus stacking, allowing you to combine multiple photos with different focus points into one sharp image. This feature is useful for macro photography.
- Enhanced macro mode: The TG-4 offers an improved macro mode with a minimum focusing distance of just 1 cm, allowing you to get even closer to your subject for detailed macro shots.
- Added RAW capture feature: The TG-4 supports RAW capture, providing more flexibility when editing photos afterwards compared to JPEG capture only.
- Advanced GPS functionality: The TG-4 features advanced GPS functionality, allowing you to add precise location data to your photos.
- Improved waterproofing: While both cameras are waterproof, the TG-4 has enhanced waterproofing up to a depth of 15 meters, compared to 10 meters for the TG-3.

These improvements make the TG-4 an attractive option for photographers looking for a rugged, waterproof camera with advanced features.
But why would you buy an Olympus TG as an every day camera, compared to, for example, a Fujifilm X100, Ricoh GR, or the compact Panasonic DMC-TZ series ?
Choosing an Olympus TG as an everyday camera depends on your specific needs and preferences. Here are some reasons why someone might opt for an Olympus TG camera :
- Ruggedness and Durability: Olympus TG cameras are built to withstand tough conditions, including water, dust, and shock. If you frequently find yourself in adventurous or outdoor situations like bushcrafting, backpacking, mountainbiking, rock klimbing or playing on the beach with your children, where your camera might be exposed to these elements, the TG series could be a better choice for you.
- Versatility: The TG series offers a wide range of features suitable for various shooting scenarios. It’s particularly well-suited for underwater photography, macro photography, and shooting in challenging environments without any extra protection.
- Portability: While the Fujifilm X100 and Ricoh GR are compact cameras, the Olympus TG series is even more portable and pocketable. Its smaller size and lightweight design make it convenient for carrying around every day without adding much bulk.
- Ease of Use: Olympus TG cameras have easy-to-use buttons and menus, so they’re great for both beginners and pros who want to take pictures quickly and easily, especially in tricky situations.
- Affordability: Compared to some other high-end compact cameras like the Fujifilm X100 or Ricoh GR, the Olympus TG series tends to be more budget-friendly. If you’re looking for a capable everyday camera without breaking the bank, the TG series could be a practical choice.
Some might say that the picture quality of the Fuji X100 or the Ricoh GR is better than the TG series, and I can’t argue with that. However, I’ve had an X100 myself, and it’s not really compact at all. The Ricoh is compact, but it also has the limitation of a fixed lens, no weather sealing, and won’t survive rough treatment. You’ll face the same issue with a Panasonic DMC-TZ series, which might have mega zoom abilities but is also very fragile and sensitive to dust and moisture.
If picture quality is really important to you, then you’re probably better off with a small mirrorless camera like an Olympus E-PL6 or the E-PL9, need an EVF ? then go for an E-M10 Mark IV, It has the advantage of interchangeable lenses, and the body’s are smaller and lighter than an X100 – however, still not pocketable.
For me, it was very clear. For more serious photography, I use my other cameras, but for an everyday camera that combines reasonable good picture quality with a lens that has the same versatility as a camera with a 25-100mm lens, can handle anything you throw at it, can be safely taken underwater at the beach, can withstand dust and sand, and easily fits into your shirt pocket or the smallest handbag, there’s only one choice, in my opinion: the Olympus TG series.
I can suggest any of them. If you’re okay with just using JPG, go for the TG-3. But if you want to take RAW photos, go for the TG-4. And if you’re really into adventurous stuff, aim for even higher models.
Have Fun !
