No Deadlines, No Clients… No Problem.

Picture this:
No clients. No stress. No “can you tweak this one by tomorrow?”
Just you, your camera… and that magical morning light you actually woke up early for.

Sounds like freedom?
Welcome to the wonderful life of the hobby – enthousiast photographer.

✌️ You don’t have to. You get to.

Here’s the big win:
You don’t owe anyone anything.
Not a client, not a portfolio, not even your Instagram followers.

So you can:

  • Edit however you feel — yes, even with that weird split toning.
  • Use RawTherapee today, Darktable tomorrow, and switch again on Sunday.
  • Mess up, experiment, learn stuff — with zero risk of a refund request.

In short: photography at your own pace.

💸 Adobe or… adventure?

Adobe’s Photography Plan clocks in around €150 a year.
That buys you some fancy sliders, a logo, and a recurring monthly charge.

But imagine throwing that same money at something else — something real. Something fun. Something with more sunlight and less licensing.

🎯 What could €150 get you instead?

Let’s dream a little:

  • A lovely vintage lens with loads of character (and maybe some mystery dust)
  • Two large, drool-worthy prints of your favorite shots
  • A weekend photo trip to the forest, the coast, or that place with the killer sunrise
  • A half-day workshop — and maybe a cookie or two
  • A proper tripod that doesn’t wobble like a spaghetti noodle
  • A beautiful photo book that makes your coffee table 73% more interesting

And the best part? You get to do this every year. No subscription required.

🛠️ Open Source isn’t second best

Let’s kill the myth: RawTherapee, Darktable and GIMP aren’t “budget Photoshop.”
They’re powerful, nerd-approved, and community-driven — with no price tag and no strings attached.

You get to pop the hood.
Tweak the engine.
Maybe break something and learn in the process.

Sounds fun, right?

📌 Final thought

Photography isn’t about obligations.
It’s about freedom.

So before you auto-renew your Adobe subscription “because everyone uses it,”
ask yourself this:

Do I want to rent my workflow…
…or invest in my photography journey?

  1. A great take on photography and editing. You’re right, that’s so much you can do with the £240 a year it costs for Adobe’s photography plan!

I’m just trying the new “agx” module in Darktable which is in beta (a replacement for Filmic and Sigmoid)… It’s very exciting!

    1. Hi Mark, thanks again.
I was a bit surprised by the price – I must have been looking at an outdated rate. £240 is quite a lot.
I wasn’t aware of the module you mentioned, so I’ll have to take another look at Darktable. To be honest, I tend to use RawTherapee more often, as you know.

That said, I’d describe myself as quite enthusiastic – maybe even a bit over the top – but I’m very satisfied with the set of open source tools I currently use.

Wishing you a nice Friday and a great weekend with your family.
      Best regards,
      Marc

  2. I pay £120 for Adobe’s Photo plan and I get Photoshop, two Lightrooms, Firefly, Behance and a Portfolio website. For me it is worth it. I can edit photos on my phone or tablet and everything synchs across all devices instantly, so if I am at a client’s I can make edits with him next to me. This is something that I can’t do with any other app. For me the price of Adobe is negligible compared to the convenience of it, and I can recoup the annual price with an hour’s fees. I guess it is Horses for Courses and this suits me the best, although the others – especially Darktable are superb.

    1. Hey James, I completely agree and I get your line of thinking – it’s not exactly surprising that Adobe didn’t see this coming. They build a product and want to keep selling it, so naturally they focus on what the pros need – everyone else just gets pulled along in the process. If I were still working professionally, I might be using LR and PS too. But for most photographers and nerds like me 🙂 open source is more than enough. Thanks for your comment, have a great weekend!

  3. Thanks Marc. I stopped my Adobe subscription a couple of years ago and switched…first to Darktable..which I found much too complicated, then to Rawtherapee which I didn’t like (couldn’t figure out how to use the brushes), then Gimp which seemed to be the reverse of Photoshop and as I use Luminosity Masks I don’t as unable to find a decent plugin. I settled on Zoner – which was very good but as it was a paid for product thought I might as well pay for Adobe. I am all for Open Source programs but I find Adobe quick and easy to use and at the end of the day that is important to me…I don’t want to Google something everytime I need to learn how to use a brush or darken a skie.

    1. Hey James,
RawTherapee, Darktable, and even Digikam are really different from LR and PS. If you give them a try and they don’t quite click with the way you like to work, it’s totally fine to stick with what suits you best. The reason why I, and also Mark from OneCameraOneLens, promote open source is because everyone’s different, and it’s easy to get drawn in by fancy, expensive software — and even hardware. We’re just trying to give people an alternative. There’s no money in it, but if I can help even one hobby photographer get started with RawTherapee and save them a few hundred pounds, that’s more than enough reward for me.
      Have a great weekend !
      Marc.

      1. That’s great Marc. As I said I am all for Open Source myself…I used Inkscape and LibraOffice amongst others (I was a Unix developer in a past life). No Open Source plays a big part in my life. It is just that I use Adobe because I am familiar with how it works – that’s all. Have a great weekend ☺️

  4. I agree wholeheartedly, Marc.

When I had to take early retirement and took up photography in 2010, I absolutely loved the freedom to do whatever I liked and edit my hundreds of daily images in whatever way I liked.

I could have learned how to use a DSLR better with better results, but with my poor short-term memory, I found it’s better to go for a walk outdoors and press that shutter button with some basic settings and then…..on my arrival home, do whatever I wanted with the results.

Occasionally, I got the perfect shot in-camera, but mostly I played around on the large desktop screen with some basic editing. I never did learn how to use Lightroom and Photoshop at that time.

I wish my brain and memory were as good as when I was still working full-time, but I have to compromise and take freedom and living my day mindfully over living my day in a constant state of anxiety and stress.

    1. Thanks so much for sharing that Vicki. I love your approach! I think you’ve nailed what photography should be about: freedom, enjoyment, and doing it your way. No pressure, no stress — just walking, shooting, and having fun with the results later. Honestly, that sounds like the perfect workflow to me. It’s not about chasing perfection, it’s about enjoying the process. That’s where the real magic happens. Have a great weekend ! Marc.
