Infrared pictures always have something special, I think, but using real IR film to create them can be quite cumbersome. That’s why there’s this PictureFX digital Film Simulation – and as always, it’s FREE !
Like with many Film Simulations, it looks great on one picture but not so much on another. So, it’s all about experimenting.
You can find this new version of PictureFX Infrared WhiteIR on FreshLuts.com by searching for ‘PictureFX’ (with the same capitalization) or simply scroll down here to find the link below.
The downloadable version from FreshLuts is in .cube format, which works in nearly every application that uses Cube Luts, such as Darktable, Lightroom, Luminar, etc.
RawTherapee users can download the same Lut from FreshLuts and then convert it using their own program or via the Free Online Lut Converter, which can also be found below.

The process in various software packages is pretty similar. In the example above, we’re using RawTherapee. First, load your preferred picture, preferably in RAW format, onto which you want to apply the PictureFX Infrared WhiteIR Lut. Set it to Neutral. Then, switch to the Color tab and scroll down to Film Simulation. Choose the PictureFX Infrared WhiteIR Lut. Set the Strength to around 70%, you can adjust it later if needed. Next, in the Color tab, go to White Balance and adjust the color temperature to your liking. Optionally, tweak the Tint and Blue/Red Equalizer to get the right color tone. Finally, in the Exposure tab, adjust Saturation, Contrast, and Exposure as needed to finish up.
In the example above, these steps are presented in sequence, but to achieve the perfect IR picture, you’ll likely need to repeat and adjust multiple steps to get the desired result.

Lovely!!! I was only talking yesterday about the weather and getting the infrared filters out.

Thanks Mark, I think your last results with IR filters were still on Fujifilm camera, I’m curious to see how they do on your Nikon Z6.
Anyway, if the weather is bad, you can still test one of my IR Luts 🙂
Cheers !

Yes, I will be using the LUTs in Darktable.
I am thinking of subscribing to Photoshop/Lightroom, but that’s another story for another day.
