Evaluating Camera Cages: My Experience So Far

Let’s start with where this fits in the timeline—I’ve had this cage since January 4, 2025, and I’ve tested it quite a bit. At the same time, I’ve also been experimenting with a lighter version: the Neewer M cage, which I had lying around but hadn’t used much. I later added a top handle and a wooden side handle to that setup.

Weight Comparison: Neewer M Cage vs. Neewer CA016T

Here’s a quick breakdown of the weights:

  • Probty wooden handle – 160g
  • Universal top handle for cold shoe – 200g
  • Neewer M cage – 400g
  • Neewer CA016T cage (complete with top handle) – 800g
  • Neewer M cage + handle + top handle – 765g

If you mount a single side handle on the Neewer M cage, it actually becomes wider than the CA016T, and as you can see, the total weight difference is just 35g.

Considering Other Options

I was thinking about getting a dedicated cage like a SmallRig, well, they’re hard to find for this camera since it’s an older model. However, I did come across the Niceyrig 407 – fits both G95 and G85, and which costs around €60-75 and weighs only 165g. That’s significantly lighter than both Neewer models and might have been the better choice—time will tell.

Practical Use and Key Takeaways

The CA016T is a solid, well-built cage with large, comfortable handles and more mounting options than the M cage. I also added an Arca-Swiss quick-release plate for easier battery access and to remove the camera when needed. However, there are some downsides:

  1. Weight – Combined with the camera (500g), the total setup reaches 1.3kg. Holding that at arm’s length for extended filming gets tiring.
  2. Battery & EVF Access – Changing the battery or using the EVF means removing the camera from the cage. Even with the Arca-Swiss plate, it’s not as quick and smooth as I’d like. You need one hand for the cage, one for loosening the plate, and… the camera? Well, let’s just say it’s not the most secure setup!

A lighter, more compact alternative (like the Niceyrig 407) might be a better long-term solution—one that allows both filming and photography without constantly adjusting the setup.

Lessons Learned

I usually avoid impulse purchases, but since I had experience with a similar cage on a Fuji, I figured I had gained enough knowledge by now. Unfortunately, different applications and different goals mean everything plays a role. And in this case, too, I should have done more thorough research and made a clearer list of requirements—what it needed to do, how I was going to use it, and so on.

What I’m Currently Working On and Future Considerations

Through all my testing and filming, I’ve encountered a few challenges. Filming in manual mode with auto ISO works well, but under very bright lighting conditions, I run into some issues. That’s why I’m now looking into potential upgrades for my camera cage.

One key addition might be an ND filter, but the question is: which strength should I get? And should I go for a fixed ND filter or a variable one? According to AI analysis, a fixed ND32 would be the best option, as the most useful range falls between ND8 and ND256. However, I haven’t fully tested this yet, so I can’t draw any firm conclusions.

Another related factor is the use of a lens hood. If I opt for a variable ND filter, using a traditional lens hood becomes impractical. A potential solution could be a matte box, but I still need to do more research on that. These are all aspects I plan to explore further in the future.

Of course! By the time you’re reading this, I’m already further down the timeline, deep into new experiments with… well, that’s a story for another article! 😉
