Olympus E-M1X S/H Unboxing and First Impression : OMG !

Today, Wednesday 21 June, UPS delivered the expected package from Asgoodasnew. I felt a little anxious because I hadn’t seen any original photos of the camera, and the shutter count wasn’t mentioned either. However, considering I paid just over €800, I reassured myself that it couldn’t be a bad purchase.

When I opened the outer box and saw an authentic Olympus box, my nervousness increased. After cutting the “Asgoodasnew quality check stickers” and opening the box, I discovered more than I had expected. All the original accessories were still in the box, neatly packaged in their original plastic bags.

Then, I laid eyes on the camera. It was also well-packed, and upon taking it out, it appeared “as good as new” 🙂 at first glance. As I examined it further, I couldn’t find a single scratch or speck; even the LCD screen was completely clean and free from any blemishes. I couldn’t help but think that the previous owner must have handled it with the utmost care, maybe even wearing gloves.

Curiosity led me to check the shutter count using the “secret menu” and I read : MS 251 ….OMG !!!
This camera was practically brand new !
The “A++ (come nuovo)” rating on eBay was certainly not an exaggeration. Perhaps it was a showroom model or leftover stock? Regardless of that, I want to express my gratitude to the people working at Asgoodasnew – Thank you Guy’s !

Now, let’s talk about the camera. It is indeed larger than the E-M1 Mark III with the battery grip, but the difference is not significant. When you place the cameras side by side, you’ll notice a variation in the handgrip on the right side and a difference in the top plate and bigger EVF. The handle provides an excellent grip and feels very comfortable.

One thing I observed is that there is more space for your hand next to the control buttons on the E-M1X, unlike the E-M1 Mark III where your thumb and part of your hand rest directly on top of the buttons. This can sometimes lead to unintentional changes in focus points or other settings on the Mark III due to the proximity of your hand. The control buttons on the E-M1X are slightly different from those on the Mark II & III, but you’ll likely get accustomed to them.

Regarding performance, I haven’t thoroughly tested it yet, but I have already activated the bird recognition feature, and it responded quickly to the birds in my garden. The bird recognition and dual processors were the primary reasons why I decided to upgrade the Mark II to the M1X. Additionally, the cost of the E-M1X combined with the Mark III is still slightly lower than that of a single OM-1, which was also a factor in my purchase decision.

The next step is to test the camera,
and above all : test the Bird recognition !
Bird recognition would be the reason for me to buy an OM-1, but I think it is still much too expensive at the moment, hopefully the E-M1X will also do well, and can at least compete with its slightly smaller brother, the Mark III.
If that’s the case then I got a good upgrade for the Mark II, and a good deal on price.

  1. Congratulations! Am I right thinking that’s about half the cost of a new one? Sounds like a great score, and near mint to boot! The button layout on the back makes more sense than the OM1, it still irks me that the menu button is on the upper left side requiring two hands go delve there. Performance wise I don’t think there’s too much in it, probably the biggest difference is the newer layered sensor in the OM1 which might improve noise handling, but that applies mostly in low light. Looking forward to seeing some shots from it, HAVE FUN 😀

    1. Thanks Tone!
The menu button is also on the MK III on the left side, I hate it too. On the MK II it is on the right, why they didn’t leave it that way on the other models is a mystery to me? anyway, i hope i have some luck with the M1X.
The OM-1 is definitely a better camera because of the sensor, maybe in a year or two 🙂
Have a nice weekend Tone !

    2. Ooh yes, and as for the price, it is indeed half price, and that price was already heavily discounted. Originally when they came out in 2019 it was €2999, but they are harder to find new now. Cheers !

  2. It looks… “Asgoodasnew”!!! That’s a nice looking camera, I look forward to the images from it. It looks really big, I bet the batteries last forever in it!

It’s a wonderful first impression Marc, I’m really looking forward to seeing how this performs! I bet you feel like it’s your birthday, or Christmas has come early.

    1. Thank you Mark!
Feels like Birthday and Christmas together actually 🙂
It’s a bit heavier than my earlier Fuj X-H1, but not much bigger, and it feels nice in the hand.
I especially hope that the AI will help me photograph birds and planes in flight, because I haven’t really succeeded before.
      Have a great weekend Mark!

    1. Dankjewel Rudi !

    2. Enjoy your M1X, especially with longer lenses as the ergonomics are the best. I photograph mostly Birds and Wildlife and why I use 2 M1X. OM needs to come out with an OM-1X, with a 25-30 mp Sensor

      1. Thank you for your comment, Gregory! A larger sensor than the current 20-megapixel standard would indeed feel like a gift from above for many Micro Four Thirds photographers—especially those using Olympus/OM System cameras. Panasonic, however, has already crossed that milestone with models like the G9 Mark II, among others. Still, I share your hope for progress in this area.

Thanks again, and I hope to see you back here on OSP!

        Best regards,
        Marc

    1. Hi Ted,
Thank you very much for visiting my site.
I was also skeptical at first, but after Pentax DSLR and then Fujifilm mirrorless, this is the best move I ever made.
We both know that a smaller sensor can’t deliver full frame results, but the results are very good, it also depends on what the medium ultimately is where you want to display those results.
Maybe you can borrow a camera from a friend and give it a try. Olympus/OM System also has a try out system, but I don’t know if it is available in all countries and regions.
      Anyway, you are welcome here!
You have a wonderful site by the way!
      Regards,
      Marc

      1. Thanks😁😁. I only shoot crop sensor now, and know someone who recently switched to the OM-1. My hesitation is a) do I want to learn a new system after many years with Canon. B) recent (serious) neck surgery has caused me all kinds of grief and may force a change on my wildlife photography.

We came to the Lowcountry 7 years ago because it is one of the last places
left filled with swamps and marshes. I was out in local marshes with a safari guide from Namibia, he was amazed how close the environment was to his home.

So… I’m taking a wait and see before I jump into a new system.
