Armor your Olympus TG Camera

Being cautious with your camera is essential, whether it is an Olympus Tough TG or a regular DSLR or Mirrorless camera, yet scratches or bumps can happen in an instant. To minimize these risks, there are several preventive measures you can take. Installing a screen protector and safeguarding your front lens with a lens hood, protective filter, or lens cap are effective strategies.

When it comes to screen protectors, I have extensive experience with both plastic and glass versions. Personally, I prefer the latter for several reasons. Plastic protectors tend to peel off at the corners over time, and they often compromise the visual clarity of the screen. In contrast, glass protectors offer a smoother surface and are more resistant to wear and tear. If you’re purchasing a used camera and notice minor scratches on the LCD, a high-quality glass screen protector can make them less noticeable or even eliminate them entirely.

In my opinion, investing in a glass screen protector is worthwhile for maintaining a pristine LCD screen. They provide better durability and clarity compared to their plastic counterparts. Plus, they adhere more securely, reducing the risk of corners lifting or bubbles forming. Whether you’re a professional photographer or an amateur enthusiast, protecting your camera’s screen is a simple yet crucial step in preserving its longevity and usability.

The JJC Z-TGS black lens cap is a lifesaver for Olympus TG-1 up to TG-7 camera. Its clever design means I can snap photos without the hassle of constantly taking the cap on and off. Just a simple twist counterclockwise and the blades smoothly open up, letting me capture the perfect shot without any annoying vignetting. Plus, when I’m done shooting, twisting the cap clockwise gives my lens reasonable protection against dust, moisture, and scratches. It’s like having a sturdy shield for my lens whenever I need it.

But, here’s the catch: I can’t use any other accessories when the lens cap is mounted. It’s a small inconvenience compared to the convenience and protection it provides, but something to keep in mind.

  1. I use a sensor protector on my Lumix G9. It means I never have to clean my sensor. I also have some internal ND filters – great for shooting in wet weather. I fit a uv filter to ALL of my lenses. You will read some rubbish about image degradation due to internal reflections but when was the last time you heard something like ‘Ah yes but the internal reflections from your uv filter have ruined the image’?
Using a UV filter means not having to clean the front element of your lens. No matter how careful you are, cleaning your lens WILL degrade the glass over time. A uv filter costs a fraction of a lens and can be thrown away when it gets too scratched.

    1. Not quite sure what you mean about your camera’s “sensor protector”, I have to look into that one.
I also have the ND filters in my E-M1 MKIII and E-M1X, incredibly easy 🙂
As for filters, I totally agree that cleaning your lenses sucks, and yes, a filter is great for that.
Reflection and the like don’t immediately scare me,
However, I have noticed loss of sharpness with some filters on my long lenses, you can find a blog about this, from me here on the site.
In any case, thanks for your comment and your visit Berny !
      hope to see you again,
      regards,
      Marc.

      1. Thanks for the link Berny, looks very interesting. I see that it is not available for Oly, but I wonder if it does not fit there either – M4/3 is M4/3 after all, and a G9 or E-M1 looks the same on the inside. I’l ask them. Thanks again Berny!
