New Lut added : PictureFX Lac du Connemara – Rugged, Rich and Earthy !

January 26, 2024
Start and publish of a new PictureFX page.
Most downloaded Luts added. Added page to top “Film Sim” menu.
ToDo : Add links to PNG download, add free stuff for a more analog look (slide frames, grain etc)

History :
In 2015 I made my first set of HaldClut’s (PNG) and Profiles for RawTherapee, I called that set PictureFX v1.0
v2.0 soon followed and in August 2016 this set was also integrated into G’MIC and the Free Online Film Emulator – many thanks to David Tschumperlé and Jonas Wagner
It wasn’t until 2020 with PictureFX 3.0 that I started developing Luts in PNG and Cube format.
In 2021 I started to focus more on making real film simulations, such as Fujifilm Superia 200, Cinestill 800T, Silberra color 100 and many others.
In the years that followed I refined the developing technique and also improved compression of the Luts.
At the end of 2022, beginning of 2023, I chose FreshLuts to distribute my Cube size Luts.
And so far it’s working very well.

PictureFX Pro Specifications :

  • usable for Photo (RAW) and Video (LOG)
  • improved analog film simulations based on real film
  • look and feel of legendary film types, like Silberra, CineStill and other
  • smaller Lut files
  • 125×125 PNG Luts
  • 3DLuts 25x25x25
  • greater compatibility with different software packages,
    of which :
    Adobe Photoshop CS6 and up
After Effects – Premiere Pro – Speedgrade
    DaVince Resolve
    Affinity Photo
    Luminar AI
    Darktable
    RawTherapee
    and many more …

Real Film Simulations :
We used old-style cameras like the Olympus OM2000 and others, along with traditional 35mm film. At the same time, we took modern-style digital photos using Fujifilm and Olympus cameras. We also took pictures of ‘color targets’ using both digital and traditional methods. Afterward, we carefully adjusted and combined the old-fashioned and modern pictures through processes like color grading, blending, fusion, and fine-tuning to make them look very similar.

Completely Free !
Yes, PictureFX is free ! Why ? Well, I create these for myself, so it’s not really a job for me. Also, I want to share the joy of using Luts and Cube Film Simulations.

All I ask is that if you share your work online or in person, please mention that you used a PictureFX Film Simulation. Check the licensing details below to learn how.

Warning : There are websites where you can buy PictureFX LUT packages. I want to make it clear that these have nothing to do with Open Source Photography or the name PictureFX, and I don’t earn a single cent from them. These sellers have interpreted “Free” and “Open Source” as an opportunity to make a profit for themselves. These LUTs have been shamelessly stolen and are being sold without my permission.

Meanwhile, new versions are always being released, so there are many more than what’s listed on this page. Just go to FreshLuts.com, use the search function, type “PictureFX” exactly with upper and lower case in “Name”, and you can find the latest additions. Note: these are all LUTs in the .Cube format !

How to use LUTS :
Each software program works a bit differently, so it’s best to refer to the manual of your software or find a tutorial on YouTube for your software package on using LUTs. But to get you started in general, here are the steps to follow:

  1. Make sure the LUTs are extracted and stored in a folder specified by your software.
  2. It’s recommended to work with RAW photos or LOG footage.
  3. Apply the LUT to your photo/footage.
  4. Adjust the color grading or strength in your software according to your preference.
  5. Modify and balance exposure, contrast where necessary.

PictureFX Luts in PNG format :

PictureFX Luts in PNG format can be found on the Open Source Photography website, within the written articles about specific Luts. However, I’ve been working on PictureFX for a long time, and the website has undergone many changes, so some download links may not work anymore.

Probably the best and easiest way is to just download the .Cube version on FreshLuts – then go to the Free Online Lut Converter: https://www.color.io/free-online-lut-converter
Then click the ‘Add Lut’ button -> Change ‘Output’ to Hald CLUT 3D -> Choose size -> Click the ‘Export LUT’ button.
