PictureFX CineStill 800T v2.0 LUT

5 minutes read time

I’ve been holding off on releasing this for quite some time. What started as a simple experiment with PictureFX CineStill 800T v1.0 back then in 2021, turned into an unexpected success. With over 42,000 downloads and countless likes, it became by far my most downloaded LUT. Not only that, but it also became one of the most popular LUTs on FreshLuts, ranking among the top 15 most downloaded on the site.

Let’s rewind to October 2021. Back then, I had stocked up on a variety of 35mm film rolls to shoot with my Olympus OM-2000 SLR. My plan was to scan the developed photos, study them closely, and tweak their digital counterparts—shot simultaneously in RAW format—using RawTherapee. Through adjustments to white balance, color toning, and more, I aimed to match the scanned film prints as closely as possible. The PictureFX CineStill 800T v1.0 LUT was born out of this process and specifically recreated the look of CineStill 800T film shot in daylight with an 85B color correction filter.

However, while creating that LUT, I also experimented with a version without the 85B filter. These had a completely different tonal quality, which I eventually developed into what I called PictureFX CineStill 800T v2.0. You could say this is the “true” version—the way the film would look in your camera without a compensation filter. It has an even stronger greenish tint than version 1, a look many photographers and videographers love. However, unlike version 1.0, I never made this one available for download.

It’s still winter on this side of the globe, and with the world’s darker days—both literally and figuratively—along with the rising trend of moody, atmospheric photography, I feel it’s the perfect time to finally release version 2 of my CineStill 800T LUT.

My LUTs were originally developed for RawTherapee, which uses HALDCLUTs or LUTs in PNG format. These are then converted to .cube format for universal use and tested in Darktable. Sometimes, I make slight adjustments along the way.

All my other LUTs are available for download at freshluts.com. The only downside is that only .cube files can be uploaded there. On the bright side, .cube files are the most widely used format (99% of the time).

For this new PictureFX Cinestill 800T v2.0, you can download it directly from my cloud storage.

Good news for RawTherapee users—both the .cube and PNG versions are available. Just scroll down to find the download links.

If I decide to upload this LUT to Freshluts.com later, I’ll post an update. For now, I prefer not to disrupt the strong momentum of the v1.0 version.

Which Cameras Are Compatible with PictureFX LUTs?

This is a question I get quite often. In short—virtually any camera or camcorder can work with PictureFX LUTs.

Do Photos Need to Be in RAW and Videos in Log?

Ideally, yes. RAW for photos and Log (or other types of neutral footage) for videos provide the most flexibility, as they retain maximum detail and dynamic range. However, if your camera only offers standard or natural profiles, that’s not a problem. You can still achieve great results by adjusting the LUT intensity in your editing software and experimenting with different blending modes to fine-tune the effect.

The Bottom Line

PictureFX LUTs are highly adaptable, and with the right adjustments, you can use them with almost any camera—no matter the format.

A quick note: About a year or two ago, I came across several websites selling my LUTs, including the CineStill 800T V1 version. All PictureFX film simulations are free and my own creation. Unfortunately, there’s little I can do about it—some people will always try to profit dishonestly. So be aware: if you see CineStill 800T for download somewhere for $50, chances are its mine, and they’ve simply stripped the internal data and rebranded it as their own.

I don’t have any Sponsoring Companies, Patreon support, or Follower Donations.

    1. I hope you like it Mark ! I’ve tested the PNG version in RawTherapee in 2021, while the .cube version has been extensively evaluated in Darktable again a few weeks ago. Currently, I’m working on a High Key version tailored for portrait and fashion photography, as there’s significant demand for it on FreshLuts.

Thanks in advance for downloading—feel free to share your thoughts!

  1. You are an absolute star. The original CineStill is one of my favourites. I have so many luts (and I’m sure many are duplicates and just rebranded). I use luts in DT when I have no inspiration!

    Many thanks for the downlopad
